GRANDTEC GHV-2000 Hi-wire Multi-format VGA To HDtv Adapter Review

After a lot of frustration, I managed to get my laptop to output a picture to my HDTV in 720p mode. But the highly touted 1080i mode just gave me a rolling series of colored bars.
Now here's the catch: Your 4:3 laptop output is AUTOMATICALLY stretched to 16:9. On my HDTV there is no way to adjust the signal to stop this (I spent many hours trying.) Of course you can set the GRANDTEC to 480 mode, but then the screen becomes unreadable. So my plan to use the GRANDTEC to allow me to edit photos in my family room won't work, because the people look like they're standing in a front of a fun-house mirror.
It's possible there is a work-around, but since GRANDTEC makes you pay long-distance charges for a call to customer service, I didn't bother to find out. I took it back to the store.
PS to GRANDTEC: Your manual and Web site stink!

Digital Foci Memory Card Gateway - USB 2.0 Multi-format Memory Card Reader (Gray) Review

I shoot Olympus cameras and I bought this specifically because Amazon says it supports Compact Flash and the XD formats. My Sandisk 8 GB Extreme IV card seems to be working just fine with it. My 1GB Olympus XD card on the other hand is not recognized at all. I'm using the reader from a late model iMac running OSX 10.5 (Leopard). Swapping between the two cards seems to confuse the reader such that the CF card isn't always recognized after I attempt to read the XD card. I have to unplug the reader to get it to reset and read the CF card. All-in-all, I'd say it's a buggy and unreliable product. Since it won't read my wife's XD card it is a useless piece of trash and a total waste of money as far as I am concerned. I have to go buy another reader and hope that when the description says it reads XD and CF that it really does.

Digital MCG-150 Foci Memory Card Gateway USB 2.0 Multi-format Memory Card Reader (Black) Review

This is the first card reader I've ever used and I like it. Hooks right up to the computer and takes the three different memory cards that I and two kids use for all our cameras. I bought it because one of the kids lost their transfer wire and this was cheaper than replacing it. Now, this is all I use to move our photos onto the laptop. The different slots are labeled with the type of card, which is good, but I have a hard time reading the labels with my bad eyesight and just go by size and shape.

Pioneer DV-420V-K Multi-Format 1080p Upscaling DVD Player Review

This may be the last DVD player I buy before going to Blu Ray, but I think it's the best I've owned. It has played several Divx and Xvid moves flawlessly using the front panel USB port (and a USB thumbdrive). DVDs look great too.
I'm using digital audio out to my home theater receiver and HDMI to a Samsung DLP TV (2006 model). The upconverted picture to 1080i looks very good. Better than my old Denon 1900. The remote is easy to use and small (but not too small).
I'm giving it 4 stars only because it doesn't have an optical digital audio output (only coaxial). I wish it did, and that may impact your decision to purchase this model.
However, at under $100, I can live with the lack of an optical audio out port.
